The prospect made his name after a stunning performance in the Manchester derby in pre-season and added to his burgeoning reputation with a two-goal salvo in the U17 World Cup final as England came from behind to defeat Spain.
City boss Guardiola has repeatedly insisted that the 17-year-old is ready for first team action, but has opted to be patient with him.
Despite that patience, Foden is now the fourth youngest English player to make his debut in the Champions League, with only Jack Wilshere, Dominic Solanke and Ainsley Maitland-Niles having made their bow younger.

Foden was given the full treatment on Tuesday, warming up with the starting XI despite being named on the bench and being treated as if the night belonged to him.
Eventually, with a little over 15 minutes to go, it did as Guardiola called him back from his warm-up and threw him into the fray.
The English public has high hopes for the youngster, who will be hoping that he doesn't have to wait quite as long for his next taste of professional action.
