Gerrard inspired Liverpool to Champions League glory in Istanbul, where Liverpool came back from three goals down at half-time to beat AC Milan on penalties in the final.
English football enjoyed a spell of dominance in Europe which reached its peak in the 2007/08 season when three of the semi-finalists were Premier League sides.
This season, every English club is on course to finish top of their group for the first time since the 2005/06 season, a year after Liverpool's magical turnaround, with Steven Gerrard unable to recall eventual winners Barcelona for a very peculiar reason.
"It has only every happened once in history when all of our teams have won their group stage, do you know when that was?", Gary Lineker asked a BT Sport panel also including Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard. "2006. You all featured for your three clubs, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in that particular year."
"But who won it?," the presenter asked. Gerrard was the first to respond, saying: "I don’t remember," before jokingly adding: "I was probably still drunk from 2005."
"I can't remember 2006...I was probably still drunk from 2005!"
