The centre-back has joined the Championship side on short-term deal after being released by the 'Black Cats' at the end of last season, following their relegation from the Premier League.
Kirchoff has pedigree and will bring lots of experience to the Bolton side after playing for Bayern Munich between 2013 and 2016, although he only made seven appearances for the Bundesliga outfit, spending the majority of his time on loan to Schalke.
Speaking to the club's official website, the 27-year-old spoke of his delight of joining the 'Trotters': "I'm really pleased to be here and happy to be back in football. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season and to play for this great team".
Wanderers will hope that Kirchoff helps improve the defence with the side languishing in 19th in the Championship, four points above the relegation zone.
